Flower Essences

Emotional Balance

The emotional state of our animal companions can be influenced and balanced through the use of essences or extracts from flowers. Emotional disruptions within animals can occur for reasons such as environmental changes, physical trauma, and emotional stress. Some animals are also predisposed to emotional upset due to their genetic makeup and personality. Animal companions may also act like mirrors in reflecting the emotional state of their human counterparts.

Origin

In the 1930s Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician, discovered 38 specific Flower Essences and their power in healing the spirit and mind. The essences are derived by bathing flowers in spring water in the presence of bright sunlight. The healing energy of the flower is infused into the water and then preserved with a small amount of alcohol.

No side effects

The essences work to balance emotional states in both people and animals. Like homeopathic remedies they can do no harm and are extremely dilute, nontoxic, and cannot be overdosed. There are no side effects associated with Flower Essences and they will not harm other animals who may ingest them because the remedy is specifically created for the individual. Flower Essences are completely compatible with all other treatment modalities and medications. If you feel your animal companion may be mirroring your emotional state you might want to consider Flower Essences for yourself as well.

Dosage

Up to seven different remedies may be chosen and placed in a one ounce dropper bottle (referred to as a dosage bottle) which is then used to administer the remedy. Apple cider vinegar is used as a preservative for animals and people who will tolerate it, otherwise no preservative is added and the bottle should be kept in the refrigerator.

How to administer

Frequency of dosing and not the quantity of the dose is the most important thing to remember with Flower Essences. Ideally one quarter dropperful should be given four times per day. Drops can be given in the mouth, on the paw pads, inside the ear flaps, or dropped on the nose. With cats, rubbing the remedy on the furless base of the ears is also effective. Flower Essences are least effective when given in food.

Some examples of Bach's essences include the following:

Beech: This remedy is useful for animals that are intolerant of children, other animals, a new person in the household, heat or cold. Can be used for picky eaters or animals that constantly whine or bark.

Clematis: Increases the attention span and the ability to focus and learn. It is used with guard, hunting, and seeing-eye animals. After surgery, it can be used to hasten the recovery of alertness.

Honeysuckle: This is considered the chief remedy for homesickness and can be used when animals are going to a new home, being confined or during hospitalization. Honeysuckle can be given to animals that are sulking due to separation from a master or mate, or animals that are overly exhausted from a long whelping or harsh sled race.

Olive: Used to combat exhaustion. Olive is often given to elderly animals that tire easily.

Pine: Pine is used to soothe animals that feel rejected (pound animals, for example) or feel guilty when their master is upset, even though they’re not to blame.
